DIRTY! DIRTY! A1 BASSLINE

My friend Jordan (of DJ duo Shuffleshame) asked me to take some piccytures of the DIRTY! DIRTY! event, this past Saturday at The Woods Live (Shivava Cafe). A1 Bassline (UK) was the headlining act . I obliged and I think the images came out pretty rad. Here's what went down.

Take It or Leave It

I have just finished re-reading 'The Prophet' by Kahlil Gibran. It is the first book I have finished in about a year. It may not be long but I found it thought provoking and inspiring, as it is supposed to be I think. He basically philosophises about different aspects of life such as love, marriage, passion, knowledge, friendship etc. I really do think I have read this book at the right moment in my life. It is just what I needed to get my reading momentum back. He wrote it so beautifully, poetically, for lack of a better word. Let me share some of my favourite excerpts with you.

On Self-knowledge...
"Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.
You would know in words that which you have always known in thought.
You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams..."

On Friendship... (by which I was most profoundly moved)
"...And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him also know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness..."

On Reason and Passion...
"... For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining;
and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to
its own destruction..."

Lyric of the Day

"Everyone's so pretty
Living in the city
Drowning in their pity
And we want more..."

Lyric of the Day

I decided to stay in on Friday night, I needed the night in. I was rather pooped from the partying the night before. All I wanted to do was disappear under the warmth of my duvet while taking in a subtitled movie. I have a slight obsession with French film, or any foreign film for that matter. They just do everything better I think. So I picked 'La Vie En Rose', the Edith Piaf biopic. Piaf is portrayed by Marion Cotillard, who deservedly won an Oscar for this role. I was riveted. The music, the voice, the life. I was once again convinced that I need to live in France, even if for a short while. In Grasse, I think. The last song she sings at the end of the film really moved me. She sings of living a life without regret. This is how I live my life. So I thought it had to be my lyric of the day that I share with you. Enjoy!

Non! Rien de rien ... (No! Absolutely nothing...)
Non! Je ne regrette rien (No! I regret nothing)
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait ni le mal (Neither the good that I've done nor the bad)
Tout ça m'est bien égal! (All this is much the same to me!)

Non! Rien de rien ... (No! Absolutely nothing...)
Non! Je ne regrette rien... (No! I regret nothing...)
C'est payé, balayé, oublié (It is paid, swept away, forgotten)
Je me fous du passé! (I don't care about the past!)

Avec mes souvenirs (With my souvenirs)
J'ai allumé le feu (I lit a fire)
Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs (My sorrows, my pleasures)
Je n'ai plus besoin d'eux! (I need them no more!)

Balayés les amours (Swept away the love affairs)
Avec leurs trémolos (With their tremours)
Balayés pour toujours (Swept away forever)
Je repars à zéro ... (I leave with nothing ...)

Non! Rien de rien ... (No! Absolutely nothing...)
Non! Je ne regrette rien ... (No! I regret nothing)
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait ni le mal (Neither the good that I've done nor the bad)
Tout ça m'est bien égal! (All this is much the same to me!)

Non! Rien de rien ... (No! Absolutely nothing...)
Non! Je ne regrette rien ... (No! I regret nothing...)
Car ma vie, car mes joies (Because my life, because my joys)
Aujourd'hui ça commence avec toi! (Today that begins with you!)

Oorlog Frankenstein

I absolutely love the side projects that the guys from Fokofpolisiekar are involved in. From aKing to Die Heuwels Fantasties, there are so many to mention. The latest one (I think) includes frontman, Francois van Coke and Yesterday's Pupil one man bander, Peach van Pletzen. They have created Oorlog Frankenstein. Genius I say. This is the single 'Dans, Dans, Dans' (Haezer remix).

My Style Icons

These ladies are my style icons, I continuously look to these women for their style and confidence. I have over the years had so many different interpretations of their styles in an attempt to create my own. It is ridiculous to admit to copying others, but all girls really do, it is how we learn, grow and create an identity. I would like to thank these beautiful women for being such inspirations to me. Just this morning I made an emergency hair appointment with the hair stylist as I felt my hair was beginning to look too normal, too "mumsy" (I had it cut and coloured on Saturday). I hate being normal. Give me "rock-and-roll", give me chic. I only feel comfortable when I have a slightly retro haircut or clothing combination. These are my ladies of inspiration.

Debbie Harry (Blondie)

Brody Dalle (The Distillers)

Sophie Dahl (ex plus size model)

Milla Jovovich - I am currently rocking the same hair colour style. Love it!

Lyric of the Day

Loving the old school punk tracks at the moment. Making me happy. Got a whole bunch of "new" music yesterday and am having such fun listening to it all.

Dance,You'reonfire going Back to Basics

Dance,You'reonfire along with this This City is the Desert (in Disguise) played Back2Basix last week Saturday. I was asked by Tina from Vixxen magazine to take some shots for the mag. I was more than happy to oblige. The only downer came when City Power saw fit to shed it's load halfway through Dance,You'reonfire's set and we had to call it an early night. Either way I got some pics.
