On Saturday we; my mother, father, sister, her boyfriend, Caroline and myself, drove out to Hartbeespoort in search of what we were told is a great food and wine festival. After being lost for a short while we discovered that we have in fact been driving on the wrong side of town, so we asked the local shop owner if they knew where the school might be. I eventually found it on my phone's GPS. We were simply a kilometre away, yet the local stores and restaurants had not heard of the most prestigious school in their area. Lo and behold we entered the Cambridge Food Festival. We were given a plastic bag with flyers and a plastic wine glass upon entry. I turned to Caroline and said "Let's find a stall to fill this sucker". So we missioned off in search of wine and food in the wind, sunshine, and freezing cold. Upon entering the field we were underwhelmed to say the least by the sheer lack of stalls. What was pronounced as gourmet cuisine on the radio (702) was merely Boerewors rolls and stuffed burgers. There were however stalls from local duck farms serving up pates; the Silver Orange restaurant was there, with their famed chocolate spring rolls and duck samoosas. Some local wine farms were scattered around, from whom we bought a glass and then a bottle to keep us warm. We did sample delicious home-made cakes, rusks, toffee and olives. I think the issue is that the fete was oversold as a festival. It was sweet but not worth the drive. I have sampled better food at the Neighbourgoods Market, for the same price, and have used less petrol and time getting there. It was however a lovely day out. The Hartbeepoort is a wonderful part of South Africa.

Picnic and Puppies in the Park
Saturday afternoon was spent under the trees in one of the many parks in my area. We had to escape the buzzing inferno that is the heat wave. We had bought goodies from the new Pick 'n Pay Food Studio and took our spread to the lush lawns. Puppies, ball throwers and half tennis ball in tow... we were packed. What an awesome lazy Saturday afternoon. Bliss!

Losing
So I
started Weight Watchers about a month ago and to date (today's weigh-in) I have
lost 4kgs in total. Not bad I say. Considering there have been celebrations of
note. Including no less than 2 birthday celebrations, my mother's and my own,
Jewish new year (2 dinners), a fast and the breaking thereof, this filled the
house with left overs and other goodies. Needless to say my waistline shrunk
and did not expand as I had anticipated. On the off days (the ones where I was
not indulging in cake and pasta), I was meticulously counting points and
weighing fruit and veggies. This has spurred my weight-loss spirit on and I am
determined to hit the 10 kilo goal come December.
Favourite
snacks
- Judy's cocktail
gherkins (free food)
- Simply Delish
Jelly (free food)
- Fruit (as fruit
salad)
- Grilled veggies
- Small packet of
Beigel Beigel Pretzels
- Sugar free soft
drinks - low cal passion fruit cordial is yum!
- Soda Water (get
a soda stream!)
- Carob and
Yoghurt covered rice cakes
- Grilled chicken
breasts done on the barbecue or gas braai.
Those are
just some of my favourites at the moment. What I love about the plan is it
teaches moderation i.e. that you can eat whatever you like as long as you
account for it.

An (annual) Unconventional Christmas
Every year we spend Christmas with an eclectic mixture of people who are not Christian (read Buddhist) yet choose to observe the holiday with a table laden with gorgeous food, a silver sparkling tree (read big twig), small, novel gifts (I got a purple feather boa), Christmas crackers and lots of laughter lubricated by lots of alcohol. Always fun!

I baked, I finally baked
So I kinda made a promise to cook everyday, ala Julie and Julia style, and post about it. That never happened. Bad on me. I did however bake today and I took photos. I love to bake. I never seem to have the time anymore though. Being the end of the year and having the time off, I had the time to bake today.
I made a concoction of a vanilla/rose water cake base with vanilla and rose water icing and the top layer was chocolately chocolate icing. I even made the effort to use real vanilla pods. I felt utter happiness when I saw the flecks of vanilla bean in my cake and icing. I hope everyone enjoys the deliciousness tomorrow. Love was baked into that there cake!

Food for Thought
On Sunday night I went with my mom and Caroline to see "Julie and Julia". We do a movie every Sunday and quite frankly I forget about what I have gone to see the moment I walk out of the cinema. But "Julie and Julia" was different. The movie was lovely. But something about it got me completely inspired. It made me want to be a better (read more disciplined) blogger and it made me want to COOK! I love cooking and do not do it nearly enough. Sheesh, my friends claim I have never set foot in a kitchen. So I made a bold and loud proclamation to start cooking every night. To reignite my passion in a sense, hopefully not the kitchen. This movie had indeed given me the kick in the butt I needed. So... It is Tuesday and how many meals have I cooked for my family? Well, none yet. So I think I will have to start on Monday. As I am booked (socially that is) for the rest of the week. Le sigh. At least I have made a blog entry. I am being disciplined about one thing! I promise to myself and my family stomachs that I will cook (good) meals for them. And I will blog about it like my fellow-cooking-blogger Julie Powell, such an inspiration!
